Recognised as probably the most beautifully proportioned letters ever produced, the inscription* at
the base of the Trajan Column has been the inspiration for thousands of Roman lettering styles.
Essendine (formally named Senatus) although very much based on the inscription's letterforms,
exhibits some differences from the original. Almost daily use as a speed-style has softened certain
angles and lent the capital S the characteristic form my hand always seems to generate.

A translation:
The Senate and the People of Rome [raised the monument for] Emperor Ceaesar Nerva Trajan Augustus, son of
Nerva of blessed memory, conquerer in Germany and Dacia, High Priest, seventeen times as a Tribune, proclaimed
Imperator six times, Father of the Nation: as an illustration of the height which this hill and place attained, now
removed for such great works as these.
